Diabetes and Oral Health
The link between diabetes and your mouth

Diabetes and oral health are closely linked, with high blood sugar levels in diabetes increasing the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, and oral infections.
Elevated glucose creates an environment where bacteria thrive, weakening the body's defense against mouth infections and making gum disease both more common and severe in diabetic individuals.
Poorly controlled diabetes further impairs healing and immune response, increasing susceptibility to infections like oral thrush, mouth ulcers, and delayed recovery from dental procedures.
Conversely, oral infections and chronic gum inflammation can worsen diabetes control, creating a vicious cycle that impacts metabolic health.[1][2][3]
Diabetes’ Impact on Oral Health
Unmanaged diabetes often leads to periodontal disease, as the immune system struggles to control bacterial growth in the gums.
Diabetes also reduces saliva production, which is vital for neutralizing acids and protecting teeth—dry mouth increases decay risk.
Research shows that treating gum disease can lower blood sugar levels, emphasizing the bi-directional influence between oral and metabolic health.[2][4][5]
Optimising Overall Health
To break this negative cycle, diabetics should prioritise:
· Blood Sugar Control: Maintain target glucose levels for whole-body and oral immune protection.
· Oral Hygiene: Brush twice daily, floss, clean dentures, and use oxygenated water or other natural mouthwash
· Dental Checkups: Visit the dentist every six months for early intervention.
· Hydration: Counteract dry mouth by staying hydrated.
· Healthy Diet: Limit sugary foods and drinks, and consume whole foods to support general health.
Quitting smoking, following medical advice, and working closely with both dental and medical professionals form a comprehensive strategy to protect oral and overall wellbeing in diabetes.[3][5][2]
