The Seven A's of Healing

Summarising the work of Gabor Mate

Last Update 9 months ago

Gabor Maté is a Canadian physician and author known for his work on trauma, addiction, and the mind-body connection.

His approach emphasizes the impact of childhood development and trauma on physical and mental health, including conditions such as autoimmune diseases, cancer, ADHD, and addictions[4].

Maté's work is often centered on the idea that trauma and emotional loss can lead to long-term distortions in how individuals interpret the world, which can manifest as addiction or other health issues[1][4].

In his book "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts," Maté discusses the types of trauma experienced by individuals with substance use disorders and how these affect decision-making in later life[4].

He argues that addiction is often a response to unbearable psychological distress and a lack of relational support[1].

Maté also critiques the societal structures that exacerbate health problems, suggesting that our understanding of "normal" is flawed and contributes to chronic mental and physical health issues[2][3].

The Seven A's of Healing

Gabor Maté outlines seven principles, known as the "Seven A's of Healing," which are crucial for overcoming trauma and fostering healing:

1. **Acceptance**: Embracing reality as it is, without judgment.

2. **Awareness**: Being conscious of one's thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations.

3. **Anger**: Recognising and expressing anger appropriately as a natural response to boundary violations.

4. **Autonomy**: Developing a sense of self that is independent of external validation.

5. **Attachment**: Forming healthy emotional bonds with others.

6. **Assertion**: Standing up for oneself and one's needs.

7. **Affirmation**: Validating one's own worth and experiences. These principles are designed to help individuals reconnect with their true selves and foster healing from trauma[5].

The 5 Biological Laws by Dr Hamer

The Five Biological Laws of German New Medicine (GNM), developed by Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, propose a framework for understanding diseases as meaningful biological responses rather than malfunctions. Here are the laws:

1. **The Iron Rule of Cancer**: This law suggests that diseases, including cancer, originate from unresolved psychological conflicts. These conflicts impact the brain and lead to physiological changes in specific organs, indicating a psychosomatic origin of diseases[2][3].

2. **The Law of Two Phases**: It describes the two-phased nature of diseases, where each Significant Biological Special Program (SBS) operates in two distinct phases: a conflict-active phase characterized by stress and a healing phase that begins once the conflict is resolved[2].

3. **The Ontogenetic System of Tumors and Cancer Equivalent Diseases**: This law correlates the development of tumors with specific embryonic germ layers, suggesting that the type and location of tumors are linked to the embryonic origin of tissues[2][3].

4. **The Role of Microbes in Diseases**: This law redefines the role of microbes, proposing that they assist in the healing process rather than cause diseases. Microbes are seen as allies that help restore tissues during the healing phase[2][3].

5. **The Quintessence**: The final law emphasizes the meaningfulness of every disease as part of a Significant Biological Special Program. It asserts that diseases are not accidental or malignant but are biologically significant processes[2][3].

These laws form the basis of GNM, offering a perspective that views diseases as adaptive responses to emotional conflicts, rather than mere pathologies.
